Panama Fishing Reports Coming Soon

Tucked into the Chiriquí Highlands, the little hamlet of Boquete represents (along with Bocas del Toro) a destination that has historically been and remains a very popular destination for tourists and expatriate residents. Boquete was named one of the top places to retire by “Modern Maturity”, “International Living” and “Forbes” magazines. The climate, natural beauty and ease of life are all contributing factors to Boquete’s appeal. Foreigners were instrumental in the founding of the town in 1911 and the local people are long-accustomed to the presence of many nationalities. The architecture of many of the older homes and buildings reflects some of the whimsical interpretations brought by early European settlers here. Boquete Panama

The climate in Boquete is often referred to as “eternal spring” with temperate days and cool nights. Air conditioning is rarely used and a fireplace is a nice addition on the coolest nights. Coffee plantations dot the mountainsides and groves of sweet oranges (the strain originally brought from Riverside, California!) bear fruit that is reputed to be the sweetest in the land. Coffee from Boquete has recently fetched a world record price and the plantations are just beginning to realize coffee’s potential as not just a commodity, but a tourist draw in and of itself. Growers are beginning to offer tours and ‘cupping sessions’ modeled on Napa Valley wine tours.

Against the backdrop of the highest peak in Panama, Volcan Baru, the scenery that surrounds the town is an inspiring landscape. Cloud forest, abundant streams and waterfalls, lush tropical vegetation, a dazzling variety of bird life and other fauna all contribute to dazzle the eye.

Chiriqui Province In and around the town you will find finely conceived developments designed to capitalize on and enhance the setting of tropical mountain life. Many are constructed using native materials such as stone or the many exotic woods found in this part of Panama. Most of the newer developments use a Spanish colonial theme as a starting point to their own signature styles. Older areas of the town have a delightful mixture of home styles reflecting the individual characters of their owners.

Because of the presence of such a diverse population, Boquete has one of the best selections of restaurants outside of Panama City. Here you can experience fine dining that you are not likely to find in other small towns in Panama. A French bistro here, an Italian brick-oven pizzeria there, Panamanian/Euro fusion menus and Peruvian fare are among the many options. Hotels are also well represented by everything from a charming country inn to a luxurious modern spa and boutique hotel. The venerable Panamonte is perched right on the Caldera River and is one of the original accommodations in Boquete. If you visit be sure to spend some time looking at the pictures of the Inn’s original owners in the lobby and try to imagine what these early pioneers experienced.

Boquete Panama Boquete is the hub of the area’s mountain recreation offering tree-trekking on zip-lines, guided mountain hikes to the nearby La Amistad and Volcan Baru national parks, bird-watching and horseback riding. While visiting the area you are likely to see Ngobi Bugle Indians in their colorful native costumes as they are frequently employed in the coffee and citrus industries and make their homes on the slopes of the Chiriquí Highlands. Occasionally you will find the ladies selling intricate beadwork jewelry at roadside stands.
