The province of Colon is best known for its capital city which is the
location of the Caribbean terminus of the Panama canal and the 482
hectare Free Trade Zone, the largest in the Americas. But the province
has much more to offer than its namesake city.
Portobello, a charming town rich in history is the closest Caribbean
access to Panama city and can be reached in under two hour’s drive
time. Portobello is home to several marina projects which will greatly
enhance the region’s appeal to tourists and investors alike.
Portobello’s heritage is evident in the many interesting ruins such as
the forts of Santiago and San Geronimo, the ruins of the churches of
La Merced and San Felipe. San Felipe was the last building to be erected
by Spanish colonists in the city; constructed in 1814. This church is
home to the famous “Black Christ”, so named because of the dark
wood from which it was carved. Each year Portobello celebrates its
legacy with a festival to honor the Black Christ. A candlelight procession
takes place on October 21 and the statue is carried through the city
joined by hundreds of faithful pilgrims.
Portobello’s more secular heritage includes the presence of the
infamous pirate, Captain Henry Morgan who took advantage of Spain’s
use of the city as a transit point for treasures collected in Central
and South America. The forts of Portobello were constructed to
protect that Spanish wealth. During the 16th and 17th centuries this
little town was enormously important, politically and economically,
to sustain the grip of the Spanish colonialists on the profits of the
New World.
Columbus visited Portobello on his fourth journey to the new world in
1502, taking shelter in the “Beautiful Port” in the midst of a terrible
storm. It is he who is credited for giving the port its name.
