| David (pronounced Da-veed) is the third or second largest city
in Panama, depending on who’s counting. It is the commercial crossroads
of Chiriqui and home to the international Henry Malek airport. Flights into
Malek airport arrive several times a day from Panama City, Bocas del Toro
and San Jose, Costa Rica among others. David has a large number of
accommodations for the visitor, from the colonial elegance of the Hotel
Gran National to more modest but still perfectly comfortable hotels such
as the Puerto del Sol, the Iberian and the Castilian.
The center of the city is dominated by a green space with a wonderful
fountain called Parque Cervantes. Around the square swirls a noisy
mixture of pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Shops of all kinds face the
park luring visitors in with a variety of goods—clothing, electronics,
appliances, furniture and the like.
There is a sizeable expatriate presence in David due to the amenities the
city has to offer. First class supermarkets, home-improvement centers,
repair shops of every kind, two very good hospitals, many dental and
medical clinics, banks, and a variety of restaurants—from fast food to
ethnic and many, many typical Panamanian ones all find their home in
David. For these reasons, some find it a bit more like the home they
left (although certainly wearing a different look!) than some of the
smaller hamlets scattered around Panama. For retirees in particular,
David offers the comforting security of knowing that the things and
services that make life run smoothly are available.
Near the city is one of Panama’s few full service marinas outside of
Panama City with a proximity to world-class angling. With each passing
year, more luxury boats make their way to Pedregal as they prepare to
tackle the fishing grounds surrounding the islands of Montuosa, Coiba,
Ladrones and the legendary Hannibal Bank.
Neighborhoods in David tend to have a decidedly Panamanian look
about them in contrast to those of the Chiriqui Highlands where one
can almost imagine being in Florida or California instead of the Republic
of Panama. Houses are closer together and with the exception of a
couple very upscale neighborhoods they are styled in a simple fashion.

David is home to a large number of universities, both public and private.
It is a very young looking city and girl (or boy!) watching is a favorite
pastime for visitors and residents alike. At night, especially on
weekends, the numerous night spots throb with energy and music.
David hosts a big “feria” once a year, in March, to showcase the
many products, services and attractions of the Chiriqui Province. There
are also several very large equestrian events held at the fairgrounds
throughout the year.
David is about a forty minute drive from La Barqueta beach, home to
the luxurious Las Olas resort and development. But La Barqueta is also
a local favorite hangout with places to eat and enjoy the sea tucked
between the more upscale parts of the beachfront here. Panama’s
annual international surf competition is held at La Barqueta each July.
