| Santa Catalina had been a surfer’s secret in Panama for many
years. Home to some of the best swells in Central America, this little
fishing village in the Veraguas Province is also the closest jumping off
point to Coiba Island and the nation’s largest marine park. Santa Catalina
offers the most consistent, easy to line up, big waves in Central America
if not all of the Americas. Its remote location, however, precludes
crowds and in Santa Catalina you are likely to have your waves all to
yourself.
Coiba National Park is off Panama’s Pacific coast. Coiba National Park
(Nacional Parque Coiba) is a group of 38 islands including Coiba Island
(Isla Coiba) and the waters surrounding them and covers 430,825 acres.
Identified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 2005, Coiba National
Park offers rich and well preserved natural resources.
Because Isla Coiba served Panama as a penal colony, access to the island
was very restricted. Almost by accident, 80% of the islands natural
resources have survived untouched and flourished through limited
human contact.
Like the surfing, Scuba diving in Santa Catalina is world class. Local
diving is excellent and in just over an hour, you can be diving in the
Isla Coiba National Marine Park. Isla Coiba is often referred to as a
cross between the Galapagos and Cocos Islands.
The word "panama" is an indigenous word meaning an abundance of fish.
Diving in this area demonstrates the truth of Panama's name. Large
schools of tuna, wahoo, and other game fish can be seen as well as
numerous pelagics, such as white tip reef sharks. Seeing eagle rays,
barracudas, and turtles are very common.
June to September, sightings of humpback whales, wintering from
South America are possible. Depending on the season, possibilities
include pilot whales, orcas and dolphins. Shark possibilities include
whale shark, tiger, bull and hammerheads.
The climate in Santa Catalina is tempered by it location on the Pacific
Ocean. Tropical year round, it is divided into the dry season during
Panama’s “summer” from December through May and the wet season
or “winter” June to November. The entire year, temperatures hover
between 90 and 100 degrees Fahrenheit (30-34 Celsius) during the day
and drop into the 70’s (20’s C) at night.
In spite of the fact that the nearest ATM or grocery store is in Sona
about an hour away by road toward Santiago, there are the rumblings
of development. The gorgeous beaches and outstanding marine
recreation can’t be ignored for very long. A luxury development has
been permitted and the ground is broken for some truly magnificent
homes on this Veraguas beach. Right now, property prices are extremely
low in comparison to other, more popular investment destinations.
Fortunately, the nearness of the nation’s ocean treasure—the waters
of Coiba—have made it possible for the Panamanian government to
spotlight the necessity of proceeding wisely and with the ecological
responsibility to maintain this natural wealth. |
